Google MS Project Plug-in

GMPP - Google Microsoft Project Plug-in brings the power of "search" to the project manager/project participant toolbox.

"Search" is the hottest technology today with Google leading the way. Google Desktop is a powerful extension of "google" technology that allows a user to index and search files on their PC or network.

Unfortunately, Google Desktop, by itself, can not see inside of Microsoft Project Files. Viewer Central has the solution: GMPP

Google MS Project Plug-in - Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How do I "upgrade" from the trial version and/or register my copy of GMPP?

    To Register:

Click on Start/Programs/Viewer Central Inc/Google MS Project Plug-in/Register

In the Google MS Project registration form click on Register

Enter the License Key into the text box and click on Register

    To get a License Key:

Click on Start/Programs/Viewer Central Inc/Google MS Project Plug-in/Register

In the Google MS Project registration form click on Purchase Online and you will be redirected to the online purchase page at Viewer Central, Inc.

  2. What is the difference between the trial version and full version?

The trial version will only allow indexing of up to 30 MPP files. Google Desktop will index the remaining MPP files (if any) on your PC, but will not be able to search inside of them. The full version will allow you to search inside of unlimited Project files.

  3. If Google Desktop can index my MPP files, why do I need the Google MS Project Plug-in?

Without GMPP, Google is only able to provide a list of MPP files on your system. Without the plug-in, you will have to open each Project file manually in order to search inside. To get an idea of the labor saving involved, imagine a situation where you need to search inside of hundreds of company projects looking for instances of a particular resource assigment.

  4. Does the Google MS Project Plug-in work with the enterprise version of Google Desktop?

Yes, t he Google MS Project Plug-in works with both the standard and enterprise versions of Google Desktop.

  5. I have installed the plug-in, but still, when using Google Desktop search, no information is returned from inside my files?

This is because Desktop was installed prior to the plug-in being installed and Google had already used its default indexing capabilities to build your index. Use our Google Re-indexer to force Google to re-index your files with the new capabilities provided by the plug-in. Click on Start/Programs/Viewer Central Inc/Google MS Project Plug-in/Reindexer. (For mor information, see "How to use Google MS Project Plug-in" section in the Help file.)

  6. What information inside of MPP files can I search with the Google MS Project Plug-in?

GMPP will index information from the following fields: Task Name, Task Notes, Task Start Date, Task Finish Date, Task Duration, Task Cost, Task Work Complete, Resource Name, Resource Notes, Resource Cost, Resource Standard Rate, and Resource Overtime Rate.

  7. How do I search specifically for information inside of MPP files?

Once the plug-in and Google Desktop are installed you may target your search as follows:

    • "filetype:mpp" - will return all MPP files indexed by Google Desktop
    • "filetype:mpp John Smith" - will return all MPP files that contain John Smith as a resource
    • "filetype:mpp Project Template" - will return all MPP files that contain references to the Project Template
    • "filetype:mpp 8 hrs" - will return all MPP files with a duration type field containing 8 hrs.
